Kapa Haka Performance

On Wednesday the 18th the whole of Wainui Beach school went to the Showgrounds in Gisborne. When we got there the seniors  ( year 6, 5 and 4 ) who were in the front row put on piupiu - Flax fiber skirts - and went on stage.

The Kaias were Bay, Materia and me ! I was really surprised when I was told I was going to be a Kaia because Materia was away so I did the leading and then I was told that I was going to be a Kaia.

Speeches and Interschool Athletics

Yes, I know I have already done a blog post on speeches but this is about speech finals. So yes I did get into speech finals and I was super nervous because the judge was Bevan Chapman who works on the radio. Spoiler alert : I won the year 5 category ! :-). I was really surprised because I  thought that Rio would win, she did a speech on Jacinda Ardern. Jacinda  Ardern is New Zealand's Prime Minister. As you know I did my speech about Kate Sheppard, (I am assuming that you have already read my blog post about speeches, BUT if you haven't I would recommend reading my blog post about speeches so you know what I am talking about)

So interschool athletics. Have any of you been to interschool athletics ?  Well I went to interschool athletics in week 4 and didn't get into any finals but came 3rd in the 100 and 200 meter sprints, Wainui also came 2nd or 3rd in the girls relay. ( Wainui is the school I go to it's full name is Wainui beach school ). Interschool Athletics is when the top people from your school compete against all the schools in your area. I think that as a whole the school did quite well because everyone did well, had fun and were good sports.

Speeches !

How many of you have done a speech ? This is my first speech and the topic is 'Changemaker' so it could be about a person, object or activity. I am doing my speech about Kate Sheppard, in case you don't know Kate Sheppard was a leading suffragette.
Here is my speech.

The two major parties, Labour and National are currently led by women and some  local candidates are also women. Now imagine that you are in 1890 and my mother and your mother can’t vote but my father and your father can vote  ( point to some women in audience and say you can’t vote now point to some men in the audience and say you can vote )  and half the population are not allowed to vote, why because they are women, Kate Sheppard changes all of this by starting petitions to prove that women should vote and that people want women to be able to vote

Hi, my name is Klara and I am going to share with you how Kate Sheppard was a real change maker.

One way that Kate Shepard campaigned was starting 2 petitions to prove that people did want women to be able to vote.  When Kate unrolled her 2nd  petition it was, drum roll please, 270 meters long!!  The first year she started a petition, it was signed by 9,000 women - the second year she did another petition, it was signed by 19,000 people, Proving that more and more people wanted women to be able to vote. Kate also had the support of the Prime Minister - who was a man -  and the Governor GenKate Sheppard completely changed the amount of women  in politics. There are now 120 members of parliament  in New Zealand  and nearly 48% of those are women - the highest number of women in positions of power in New Zealand since 1919.eral, who was also a man.

Why was women having the vote so important?  Well first of all voting needs an array of opinions because if the only people who vote all have the same opinion the other side doesn't have a chance, but if people who all have a different opinion and the majority vote for one side it proves that the winning side is the best for the people.

Thanks to Kate Shepard and  other women and men like her, New Zealand was the first country to let women vote, proving that women and men are both just as equal as each other. Kate is also on the 10 dollar note putting her in the ranks of Edmond Hillary who climbed Mount Everest with Tenzing Norway and Lord Rutherford who split the atom.

“Do not think that your single vote does not  count, the rain that soaks the parched ground is made of single drops” Kate Shepard said.

Do you like it ? I think that I did well.

Term Rap Up

This term was completely out of control so I will only choose one topic to talk about... umm umm I don't know what to talk about! I know Kapa Haka!

In case you do not know Kapa Haka is a form of Maori dancing which includes poi.

This is a Poi.
This year Moana syndicate is doing a few Haka's ( war dances ), a few songs and a poi song. My favorite is the poi song because I enjoy learning the steps to the poi. The name of the poi song is Aue Rona E.

We went there to plant up the wetlands with the trees that The  Shade House had grown in the Shade House we also were tidying up the trees that had been planted last year.

Also on Tuesday Wainui Beach school went to Pihitia station to learn about where your food comes from. There was multiple little workshops like butchering the meat, technology on a farm, dairy, shearing, dogs and sheep, conservation  things like that.

More Maths :-)

This week  MLH has decided to start Maths-Whizz, anyone know it ? Well it's like a math thing where you do a game version of a math skill and then you do the same skill with different equations  but with just a blue background. I like the blue background better than the game one because then there is nothing to distract you while you are doing maths (that may have something to do with my Irlen Syndrome).

When you are doing the maths, if you get the questions right, you earn credits (money) and buy things like pets, pet food, clothes and furniture. Also, if you don't feed your pet, they get rehomed !

When you go past a certain amount of skills you get parts of a gem and after you get a certain amount of gems you go up levels. Rookie, Pro, Master and Superstar . You also get to design a character to go as you in your home ( I chose Jungle for my theme. The other theme you can choose is Space )

This is my home 🠉

🠝This it were you can buy things like pets ( the paw print button ) , Pet food ( the dog bone button ) , Plants   (the leaf button ) you get the picture.

I learnt in Maths Whizz a new times table skill like this 6x70= 6x10x7 =420 and I also practise old skills which helps a lot because then I don't forget the old skills.

Quick write

Quick write this week was about a healthy lifestyle. There was 4 questions you had to answer, the questions were: 1 What makes a healthy lifestyle ?, 2 What are the benefits of a healthy lifestyle ?, 3 What are your favorite healthy foods and why ?, 4 What are your favorite forms of exercising and why ?   In the next paragraph, I will write one of my answers.

1. A healthy lifestyle is made by having a healthy diet and active lifestyle. A healthy diet is when you swap out unhealthy things like biscuits and chocolate for salad and fruit. Fruit and vegetables also have more vitamins and dietary fiber. Dietary fiber keeps you fuller so you can work mare at school and have fun doing sports !

Queen Charlotte Sound

How many of you have walked the Queen Charlotte Sound, without tourists? Well I'm guessing not many of you.
I know I am probably going to sound like an ad but I can't really help it because the walk was soo much fun. You don't even need to carry all all your luggage! The water taxi takes the things you will not need while you are walking then the water taxi drops your stuff off at the place you are staying overnight.
We stayed at Furneaux Lodge the first night, Ponga the second, Treetops the third and Mistletoe the last!
The scenery was pristine, meditative and almost picture perfect.  It felt like we almost had the place to ourselves.  The restaurants were delicious the service made me feel like a duchess.

Holidays :-)

Wow
Term just whizzed by and already it's holidays but Wainui Beach School has done sooo much learning during lockdown and at school.
My favorite part of learning at home was the Google meets because on Fridays we could dress up in a particular theme  like the African big five and a famous person.

Road safety

So the 101 in road safety is , ALWAYS check left and right, liston then repeat, when you can, ALWAYS cross at a crossing because the people who are in cars expect you to cross at a crossing and are on the lookout . If you are cycling by yourself  know the safest route, if you don't maybe you aren't ready to go there  by yourself.
Even if your parent is telling you to just cross the road you should cross at the crossing ( if there is one
Be careful when you are cycling on the footpath cars could back out from driveways , people are walking on there , you don't want to crash into them ! And last of all , cars that are parked along the side of the foot path they could open a door and smack into you so look out for them by looking in the windows while you are cycling past

So, lets go though what we have talked about ,
1. ALWAYS check left and right, liston then repeat
2. When you can, ALWAYS cross at the crossing because the people who are in the car expect you to cross at the crossing and are on the lookout
3. If you are cycling on your own know the safest route, if you don't maybe you are not ready to go there by yourself
4. Even if your parent is telling you to just cross the road you should cross at the crossing ( if there is one
5. Watch out for cars backing out of their  driveways
6. Watch out for people on the footpath
7. Watch out for cars parked along the side of the foot path ( see how to watch out for them on the 2nd paragraph )

Lockdown Learning !!

Lockdown learning !!

Wow what a lot of learning Moana Hub  did during lockdown ! Learning from home was really interesting ,
fun and creative . What did we do you ask ? Well let me tell you ...

There was obviously a lot of thinking going on at the teacher’s end ! But decisions were probably made
easier by  themes . The themes we did were , Famous People , A.N.Z.A.C , Animals , Story Time  and
Our World . Our World was not actually at home but it was still a theme !

My favorite theme was Story Time because I love books ! and the activities were a good mix between
digital and non- digital .

So all in all everything was just right :-)

Incredible start to the year !!!

The first week has gone in a flash as Buzz groups were formed and swimming started, everything went by in a flash . Quick writes were introduced and the first was Chocolate vs Cheese for me it was a tie and for many it was Chocolate.

One of the first games played was Tension , where you had 1 minute to write as many words as possible in a subject 'green veges ' if the words are on the list you get 1 point. We also did some games with balloons and cups , when we were playing with the cups we were only allowed to touch the cups with a rubber band !! but Koka Terri and Ngiare had attached strings to the sides so each person in your Buzz groups could hold a string and manipulate the rubber band to open and close . Thanks for  reading my 1st blog post of the year ! :)
Yours sincerely, Klara
